The newspapers are always full of stories of just what lengths people will will go to under the power of greed (lobha). In New York last week two men wheeled a dead friend to a store and tried to cash one of his cheques, getting arrested for their efforts:
Two men have been arrested in New York for wheeling a dead friend through the streets in an office chair and trying to cash his cheque.
witnesses saw the two pushing the chair with Cintron flopping from side to side and the two individuals propping him up.”
The men left Cintron’s body outside the store, went inside and tried to cash his cheque
The store’s clerk, who knew Cintron, asked the men where he was, and O’Hare told the clerk they would go and get him, Browne said.
Meanwhile, a police detective having lunch at a restaurant next door noticed a crowd forming around Cintron’s body
Cintron had died of natural causes. According to The Greater Discourse on the Mass of Suffering (M13) pretty much everything bad can be attributed to sense desire, although in a different sutta, the reason religious people fight, is not sense desire, but attachment to views and opinions. In the story above, the cheque was worth $180
